He has a talent for packing entire books’ worth of ideas into a sentence or paragraph. Quentin is a much more likable character in this book, and that makes a huge difference.īecause, hell, Grossman can write. This is obviously intentional, as Grossman later has Quentin point out to others how he has changed. But no longer does he whine, pout, or make excuses for himself. He picks himself up, dusts himself off, and gets a real job. He is taking his expulsion from Fillory in stride. I don’t think I can explain it without going back and re-reading the other two-which I am not going to do! But I can tell you why I liked this book a lot more: Quentin is much more tolerable.Īt thirty years old, he has actually grown up. I don’t know why I am so apathetic about these books. (And it doesn’t help that there are so many people whose names begin with the same letter: Poppy and Plum and Penny, oh my! Josh and Julia and Janet, oh my! Don’t be a dick, Grossman.) As the concluding entry in this trilogy, The Magician’s Land ties together a lot of the plots begun in either of its two predecessors-but I didn’t remember anything about them. The other dimension of my disappointment was that I clearly retained nothing between books. As if it was supposed to in the first place. My issues with The Magicians and The Magician King could be summarized as: “So what?” So what if being an adult magician in the real world sucks? So what if Fillory is real but you got kicked out? Quentin Coldwater was an annoying, unsympathetic protagonist who whined because his life didn’t make any sense. This is a series that has steadily improved over the three books, with The Magician’s Land probably offering the most stable and enjoyable story. At the very least I was hoping to find closure. ![]() But there it was on my library’s New Books shelf … it seemed almost rude not to borrow it. As a character from another famous fantasy show once said, "If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention." While Season 2 ended on a hopeful note, fans shouldn't expect things to be hunky dory for the students of Brakebills. Finally, after all magic has been shut off, Julia shows Quentin that there may still be magic somewhere as she sits next to him, doing a simple spell that creates a spark. Persephone then whisks Reynard away - but gives Julia her shade back in exchange. Her final plan to confront and kill Reynard falters when Reynard's mother - Persephone, Our Lady Underground, whom Julia's group worshipped and tried to summon - asks Julia to show mercy. She terminated the pregnancy, but lost part of her shade in the process. After joining a group of Magicians that were tricked into summoning the trickster god Reynard, the being then raped Julia and impregnated her. While no one in The Magicians has it easy, few have it worse than Julia. So what happened between that and the beginning of Season 3? The Beast Is Dead & Reynard Steps Up Season 1 ended with all of his friends bleeding on the ground after being attacked by "The Beast," who begun working alongside his childhood best friend, Julia. He also discovered that none of it made him happy. He discovered that the magical land he read about as a child, Fillory, is real. ![]() He made cool magical friends like Alice, Elliot, Penny, and Margo, and then slept with most of them.
